Rice exports reach 312,000 tonnes in January

Vietnam’s rice exports in January have been estimated at 312,000 tonnes worth US$152 million, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The statistic shows that the nation saw a decrease of 14.5% in volume and 12.7% in value of rice exports over the same period last year.

Vietnam shipped 6.316 million tonnes of rice overseas earning US$2.931 billion in 2014. The average free-on-board price of Vietnam’s export rice hit US$463 per tonne, an increase of 4.4% compared to 2013.

China remained the largest market of Vietnam’s rice exports last year with a market share of 30.16%, buying 2.018 million tonnes valued at US$891 million.

The Philippines was the second largest export market of Vietnamese rice with a market share of 20.59%. The volume and value of rice exports to the ASEAN country increased 2.67 and 2.7 times over 2013, respectively.

In addition, Vietnam also exported rice to numerous other key markets in 2014 including Malaysia (7.31% of market share), Gana (6.02%) and Indonesia (5.1%).
