CPI sees slight increase in June

The national consumer price index (CPI) in June rose 0.35% against the previous month, pushing the CPI in the first half of 2015 to a year-on-year increase of 0.86%, announced the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO) on June 24.

The slight surge was mainly attributed to an increase in petrol prices of VND1,200 per litre since May 20 (up 6.2%), and upward adjustments of diesel prices on May 12 and June 4 (up 3.9%), accounting for a 0.3% surge in June’s CPI.

The prices of healthcare services in Ho Chi Minh City increased on June 1, resulting in a month-on-month 0.43% surge in national prices, and contributing a 0.02% jump in the national CPI.

Price increases in energy (up 1.52%) and package tourism (up 1.12%) were also responsible for the June CPI increase.

The GSO report showed that among 11 groups of commodities used to calculate CPI, the prices of food and food services, and post telecommunications both decreased by 0.03% against May.

Other groups saw price increases: transport (up 3.54%), medicines and healthcare services (up 0.38%), drinks and tobacco (up 0.24%), garments and footwear (up 0.17%), housing and building materials (up 0.3%), household appliances (up 0.12%), and recreation and tourism (up 0.26%).
