At a reception for Bernerd Da Santos, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the US power company AES, Deputy PM Dung said he highly valued its construction and operation of the Mong Duong II Power Plant.

He also appreciated AES’s proposal for cooperation in developing energy and power sources, noting that Vietnam’s demand for electricity to power its production and development is growing and requires huge investment and advanced technology to meet environmental protection standards.

Deputy PM Dung stated that thermal energy will play a major role in Vietnam’s power structure since most of the hydropower resources have already been tapped.

Coal-fired power projects require the use of advanced and environmentally friendly technologies so as not to affect the lives of residents near these plants, said Dung.

At the meeting, the Deputy PM also confirmed that Vietnam would introduce policies to develop gas-fired electricity generators and renewable resources to ensure adequate power supply for economic growth.

For his part, Bernerd Da Santos also affirmed the corporation’s commitment to working closely with the agencies and units concerned to enhance the efficiency of existing projects and expand into new energy sources.
