The announcement marks the first time a State-funded port has been leased in 30 years. Accordingly, two bids for leasing the Cai Mep and Thi Vai container ports are scheduled to begin in the third quarter of this year.

The Cai Mep-Thi Vai international port was officially made operational in January of this year after four years of construction. The project was funded with nearly VND14 trillion (over US$650 million) contributed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Vietnamese government.

The Cai Mep-Thi Vai International Port is built on 76 hectares, with two terminals for 80.000DWT (deadweight tonnage) container vessels (700,000 TEUs/year) and two docks for ships with load of 50,000 DWT and above (2 million tonnes of cargo/year).
