During the resistance war against the US imperialists, Cu Chi was the belt at the north-western gateway of Saigon, holding an important strategic position, located in the enemy’s “Iron Triangle” free air raid zone. Cu Chi was considered a strategic area and a solid base of the Party Committee and the Saigon-Gia Dinh Military Zone.

From 1966-1967, the US imperialists carried out many sweeping battles, continuously dropping thousands of tonnes of bombs and chemicals of all kinds on Cu Chi.

On average, each square metre of Cu Chi land contained 3kg of artillery pieces and 100.24 grams of chemicals, mostly dioxin.

With the spirit of bravery, ingenuity and creativity in fighting, Cu Chi’s soldiers and people were honoured by the Central Committee of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam with the noble title of “The land of steel and copper wall” on September 17, 1967.

Stepping out of the resistance war to save the country, Cu Chi District has 35,000 policy beneficiary households, 2,128 Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, 33 Heroes of the People's Armed Forces and Heroes of Labour, and more than 10,000 martyrs…

On the occasion, the organisers presented gifts to a number of policy beneficiary families with meritorious services to the Revolution and gave scholarships to students who are children of outstanding policy families in Cu Chi District.
