Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam made the remark while attending a ceremony held in Can Tho city on March 30 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Can Tho University (March 31, 1966-2016).
Scientific research capabilities determine the training quality of a university, Dam said, adding that there needs to be specific criteria for scientific research, such as the number of works published in prestigious science journals and the number of initiatives and inventions, to serve the evaluation of lecturers and students.
The government official praised the outstanding achievements of the university as it has developed into one of the country’s leading universities and ranked 39th in the top 100 universities in Southeast Asia as announced in a poll conducted last January.
He suggested Can Tho University strengthen management over its output quality associated with evaluation and recognition from society, labour users and international partners.
The deputy PM expressed his wish that the university would be among the pioneers in educational reform, maintain its place among Vietnam’s leading universities and achieve higher ratings in the region and around the world, thereby contributing more to the socio-economic development in the Mekong Delta region and of the whole country.
On behalf of the Party and State leaders, Deputy PM Dam presented the Labour Order, first class to Can Tho University in recognition of its efforts and achievements over the past years.
