Bac Lieu is a pioneer in raising commercial shrimp, including intensive farming in glasshouses.

With a 60km shoreline, good processing factories and shrimp breeding facilities, Bac Lieu has solid assets that can allow it to develop its saltwater shrimp industry. The province is currently home to over 120,000 hectares of shrimp cultivation area.

Speaking at the session, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc approved in principle the project of an agricultural area where high technology is applied in shrimp breeding.

The PM asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to coordinate with the Ministries of Science and Technology, Finance, and Planning and Investment to support Bac Lieu’s efforts to realise this important project.

Deputy PM Dung requested that the province ensure a water supply for locals’ daily use during the dry season, overhauls the irrigation system, and restructures local production to match the current situation.

Focus should be paid to investing in infrastructure facilities, technology transfers, breeding and marketing, as well as establishing cooperatives and expanding consumption of the product, he noted.

The Government leader also urged local authorities to ensure social security and order, which would be a concrete foundation for sustainable development.
