In his speech, HCMC Party Secretary Nguyen Thien Nhan praised the offensive as a shining symbol of the patriotism and iron will of the Vietnamese people.
He compared the military offensive to an imperishable heroic epic written with the blood shed by the people and soldiers from all over the country, mixed with the aspirations for peace, national independence and unification.
The Tet Offensive dealt a strong blow to the Americans, undermining their aggressiveness and forcing them to direct negotiations in Paris, stated Secretary Nhan.
He emphasised that the offensive marked a major turning point in the war against the Americans, which was followed by continuous victories in the subsequent years and ultimately lead to the liberation of the entire south of Vietnam in 1975.
At the ceremony, Nguyen Thi Phuong Nghi, a student from the Ho Chi Minh City National University, said that the younger generations will build on the spirit of the Tet Offensive to record new triumphs in national development.
