Localities urged to implement resolution on sustainable Mekong Delta development

NDO/VNA – The Government’s Resolution No. 120 on the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta issued in November 2017 has been highly appreciated by domestic and foreign experts, thanks to its presentation of specific development perspectives, models, and solutions, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said at a working session in Hanoi on February 19.

The PM requested a full assessment of the implementation of the resolution as some ministries, sectors, and localities still lack productivity in the field.

It is important to provide guidance on science and technology that is suitable for climate change adaptation in the delta, as well as agricultural restructuring and sustainable development to improve people’s living standards, he said.

The Government leader asked to clarify financial resources for developing the delta. Apart from the state budget, official development assistance (ODA) capital should be socialised in the public-private partnership (PPP) and business forms.

He requested swift, supplement resources for regional development from now until 2020, alongside a sharp focus on infrastructure development, especially in irrigation and transport infrastructure.

He assigned the Ministry of Finance to consider the establishment of a regional development investment foundation and an agency to direct the implementation of the resolution.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, nine ministries along with six city and provinces in the delta have issued action plans after over a year of implementing the resolution.

The ministry has updated the region’s meteorological, hydrological, oceanographic data, as well as data on sediment and water resources.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has conducted surveys to assess river and coastal erosions in the region.
