Vietnam praised for timely and resolute action against COVID-19

German political institute Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) recently published an article praising Vietnam’s efforts in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, in which the Institute emphasised that the key to success lies in the prompt action and resolve of the Government, functional agencies, and the Vietnamese people.

Chief Representative of KAS in Vietnam, Peter Girke, said the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control has taken action since the early stages of the crisis, whist the Vietnamese people have been aware of the fight since early February.

Vietnam closed its schools within the first few days, initially in major cities and then nationwide, he noted, adding that universities were shuttered soon after, and events of all types were suspended or cancelled.

He also spoke highly of efforts taken by Vietnam in combating COVID-19, such as tightening border control, mobilising the army, suspending visa waivers for tourists from many European countries, quarantining passengers entering Vietnam for 14 days, restricting gatherings of more than 10 people, and closing restaurants and entertainment venues.

He highlighted the degree of public support for the Government’s measures as well as effective communication and information dissemination to raise awareness on the disease. He also suggested Vietnam continue with the measures conducted in order to contain the epidemic until specific treatment drugs and vaccines are produced.
