The event – the 10th of its kind held by the Meet Vietnam Organisation – has witnessed the attendance of Belgium Prof. Francois Englert, one of the two 2013 Nobel Prize laureates. Prof. Englert together with Peter Higgs were credited with the discovery of the Higgs mechanism.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Prof. Englert highlighted the huge importance of the Higgs boson discovery and the great importance it has in the understanding of the origin of the mass of subatomic particles.
Former Director of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Nguyen Van Hieu attached importance to the conference, saying that it will help to provide basic knowledge of building the physical world.
Vietnam needs to organise more conference like this to take advantage of international scientists’ support in studying and developing new materials in the fields of shipbuilding, weapon manufacturing and information technology.
On the same day, thousands of students and astrophysics lovers had a chance to talk with Dr. Nguyen Trong Hien, an overseas Vietnamese scientist working for NASA, as part of the conference’s framework.
Also on the side-lines of the event, Binh Dinh provincial leaders held a working session with representatives from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City National University and the Meet Vietnam Organisation, on the development of education, science and technology in the province.
Deputies discussed the idea of building Quy Nhon city into a scientific and educational destination based on the ICISE, which will be concretised by a project to construct the Quy Hoa Scientific and Educational Park.
Provincial leaders were in favour of the idea, considering it a good opportunity to make a difference and direct provincial tourism in orientations towards scientific tourism, contributing to raising the youth’s passion for science and turning Quy Nhon into a centre for both domestic and international scientific events.
The Meet Vietnam Organisation was co-founded by Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Van and Prof. Nguyen Van Hieu in 1993 to boost the development of high-level researches in Vietnam and Southeast Asia as well as to create research groups in co-operation with the Western scientist community.
Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Van is an overseas Vietnamese in France. He was presented with the Legion of Honour Order by the French government for his contribution to science.
