Additional 260 COVID-19 infections found, Vietnam surpasses the 17,000 benchmark

Vietnam recorded 260 new cases of COVID-19 infection this afternoon (July 1), with the country having now surpassed the 17,000 case benchmark.

The new infections, including two imported cases, from 6 am to 12 pm on the first day of July, pushed up the national tally to 17,312, the Ministry of Health reported.

Among the 258 domestic cases, 154 were found in Ho Chi Minh City, 48 in Binh Duong, 28 in Long An, ten in Phu Yen, five in Hung Yen, four in Bac Giang, three each in Nghe An and Ha Tinh, and one each in Binh Phuoc, Dong Thap, and Bac Ninh. Among them, 207 were detected in quarantine sites or sealed-off areas.

As of 12pm, Vietnam had confirmed 15,512 domestic and 1,800 imported cases. A total of 6,840 patients were given the all-clear, while the death toll has reached 81.

Of the patients under treatment, 278 have tested negative for the novel coronavirus once, 14 twice and 81 thrice.

The total number of local infections since the fourth wave of COVID-19 outbreaks hit the country on April 27 amounts to 13,942, of whom 4,066 have recovered.

Fourteen localities went through two weeks without new infections in the community.

Since April 29, Vietnam has carried out 3,142,956 tests for 7,437,135 people.

On July 1, the Steering Committee for COVID-19 prevention and control of Phu Yen Province said that Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long had signed a decision to establish a special team with 18 members tasked with supporting the prevention and control of COVID-19 in the province.

As of 8 am this morning, Phu Yen has recorded 150 cases positive for SARS-CoV-2, with Tuy Hoa City being marked as a "hot spot" as it has continued to record 41 new cases, bringing the total number of infections in the city to 107.

In order to perform screening on a large scale, on the evening of June 30, more than 4,000 workers and their relatives in Hoa Loi social housing area in Hoa Phu Ward, Thu Dau Mot City, Binh Duong Province, gave samples for the COVID-19 screening test.

As a close contact to a COVID-19 patient turning positive for SARS-CoV-2 in Chon Thanh district, Binh Phuoc Province has decided to put Chon Thanh in strict social distancing order according to Directive 15/CT-TTg from noon today.

This morning, over 300 lecturers and students of Hai Duong University of Medical Technology rushed to Ho Chi Minh City on a flight operated by national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines to accompany the southern economic hub in its fight against the epidemic.

On the same day, Dong Thap Medical College sent 35 students and two lecturers to Sa Dec City to voluntarily join local health forces in supporting tracing, epidemiological investigation and related work.

On the morning of July 1, the Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control in Lao Cai City said that the medical blockade on Coc Leu Market had been lifted, allowing the market to return to normal operation from today. Beforehand, over 800 traders and those working at the market were tested and all gave negative results.
