The view was shared by Dr Petr Tsvetov, Senior Research Fellow at the Viet Nam and ASEAN Studies Centre under the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia, Russian Academy of Sciences, in an interview with a Nhan Dan Newspaper correspondent in Russia on the significance of the first General Election to elect the National Assembly of Viet Nam (January 6, 1946).

Exactly 80 years ago, on January 6, 1946, a landmark event in Viet Nam’s history took place as Vietnamese people, for the first time, exercised their right through the ballot to directly choose and elect capable and virtuous representatives to shoulder the affairs of the nation. The success of the General Election marked the birth of the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam, today the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.

Over its 15 tenures in the past 80 years, the National Assembly (NA) has significantly contributed to the Party and the nation’s glorious revolutionary cause, deserving as status as the highest representative body of the people, the supreme organ of State power, and a forum where the nation’s intelligence, will, and aspirations are crystallised, NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man has said.

A national ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the country’s first general election took place in Ha Noi on January 6, featuring a keynote speech by Party General Secretary To Lam.

The closing ceremony for the interactive online multiple-choice contest marking the 80th anniversary of the first General Election to elect the National Assembly of Viet Nam was held by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee, in Ha Noi, on December 12.

The 48th session of the National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee opened in Ha Noi on August 11.
