The EPI was released on November 13 by Education First. The index is based on the results of 2.1 million non-native English speakers from 116 countries and regions. The EPI classifies countries into five proficiency levels, from very high to very low.
With 498 points out of 800, Vietnam was placed in the low proficiency band.
The country’s 2024 ranking has dropped five places compared to 2023, from 58 to 63. This ranking is also quite far from Vietnam's best ranking in 2019, at 52nd place.
Vietnam was ranked eighth in Asia, behind Singapore (609 points), the Philippines (570 points), and Malaysia (566 points).
Globally, the Netherlands remained at the top of the index with an average score of 636 points.
Europe remains the most proficient region in English despite a slight decline in 2023.
