General Phan Văn Giang noted that his official visit to the US marks the one-year anniversary of the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace, Cooperation, and Sustainable Development between the two countries. The visit aims to implement the defence cooperation content agreed upon by the senior leaders of both nations in their joint statement on upgrading bilateral relations, and to further enhance defence cooperation between the two countries.

He shared that he highly values the strong commitment of the US in cooperating with Vietnam to address the consequences of war.

General Phan Van Giang requested that the US continue to prioritise accelerating the dioxin contamination remediation project at Bien Hoa Airport; support Vietnam in addressing dioxin contamination at Phu Cat Airport; tackle the issue of unexploded ordnances; and provide information, documents, equipment, and technology for DNA testing to aid in the search for and identification of Vietnamese soldiers missing in action. Vietnam is committed to continuing close cooperation with the US in the efforts to find US soldiers missing in action during the war.

Patrick Leahy affirmed that both he personally and many US senators have a strong connection with Vietnam and are dedicated to contributing to the bilateral relationship.
