Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports up 14.1% in eight months

Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable export revenues were estimated at US$346 million in August 2018, bringing the total value in the first eight months of the year to US$2.7 billion, up 14.1% compared to the same period of 2017.

The figures were announced by the Department of Agro-product Processing and Market Development under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

China remained the largest importer of Vietnamese fruit and vegetables during the January-August period, with a market share of 74% and an export value of US$1.7 billion, representing an increase of 12.1% year on year.

The exports of Vietnamese fruit and vegetables to Thailand grew 38.6% annually, while the US and Republic of Korea markets reported respective rises of 19.3% and 18.7%.

Vietnam imported US$224 million worth of fruit and vegetable products in August, bringing the eight-month import revenues to US$1.15 billion, up 13.4% over the same period last year.

According to the Department of Agro-product Processing and Market Development, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports are showing signs of a slowdown, however, the exports of fruit and vegetables are predicted to reach US$4 billion in 2018.

In addition, businesses are currently facing a range of issues concerning market competition and protectionism measures via stricter technical barriers in the import markets. Therefore, the Department of Agro-product Processing and Market Development suggested promoting the dissemination, consultation and training of enterprises on the application of goods quality standards in foreign markets, and addressing the existing problems in food safety, packaging, and labels for fruit and vegetable products.
