Vietnam’s 0-1 loss to Indonesia in the first leg of the second qualification round for the 2026 World Cup has thrown Vietnam into a difficult situation.

After three games, Troussier’s team earned only three points, the same as the Philippines but one behind Indonesia and nine behind Iraq, who are topping Group F of the AFC qualification.

In the second leg scheduled for March 26, Vietnam must defeat Indonesia to secure their advancement to the next round. This task is not hard, especially since Vietnam hasn’t lost to Indonesia at My Dinh in the past 20 years.

But currently, Vietnam are not in good form, as they have lost nine out of the ten most recent matches. The attack lacks creativity, while the defence frequently makes mistakes.

Troussier’s choice of players always puts the team at a disadvantage, while Indonesia is excited after outrivalling Vietnam in the two most recent clashes.

In addition, coach Shin Tae Young has the service of two high-quality naturalised players, Thom Haye and Ragnar Oratmangoen.
