World News in Brief: July 25

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on July 24 ordered extensive search operations in southern province Pattani to hunt for those involved in the gun attack on a security check point that killed four people on July 23. Prayut, also the defense minister, instructed the restive southern province to step up security measures.

* At the meeting on Wednesday (July 24) with Myanmar's Minister of Labor, Immigration and Population U Thein Swe, State Councilor and Minister of Public Security of China Zhao Kezhi said that China is willing to strengthen cooperation with Myanmar in border issues and immigration control.

* The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) fired two unidentified projectiles into the eastern waters early on July 25, according to the Republic of Korea 's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). The military authorities of the RoK and the United States were analyzing what the projectiles were, the JCS said.

* Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov pledged on Wednesday to strengthen bilateral political and trade ties amid a "difficult international situation," particularly growing US hostility towards both nations.

* Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro on Wednesday oversaw the launch of a large-scale defensive military drill in the Venezuelan Caribbean. The drill will be held in three stages and end on Aug. 30.

* US President Donald Trump, who is seeking to slow the flow of migrants seeking to enter the United States illegally from Mexico, said on Wednesday Mexico may put more troops at the US-Mexican border.

* Boris Johnson promised in his first speech as prime minister to lead Britain out of the European Union on Oct. 31 with "no ifs or buts" and warned that if the bloc refused to negotiate then there would be a no-deal Brexit.

* Rescue operations continue on Wednesday in Indian state of Assam, in northeastern India, after torrential rains and floods up to two meters high killed dozens and affected some 3 million people.

* Eight people were killed with six others missing as a pilgrimage vessel capsized in Myanmar's Mandalay region on Wednesday morning, according to a press release from Myanmar Fire Services Department. Search and rescue operations are underway for the missing which included two women.

* The national weather center, Meteo France on Wednesday placed twenty departments in northern France, including Paris and surrounding communes on heatwave red alert -- the highest level on the agency's four scale, and urges residents to be extremely vigilant. It added that 60 regions remained on orange alert as hot spell is still engulfing 90 percent of French territory.

* The chief commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) denied on Wednesday that any of Iran's drones has been downed by the United States in the Strait of Hormuz region recently.

* US President Donald Trump on Wednesday vetoed congressional resolutions that intend to block the Trump administration's efforts to sell weapons to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

* The International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved on Wednesday disbursing US$2 billion as the final tranche of a US$12-billion loan to Egypt to support the country's economic reform program.

* Interior Ministry of Libya's UN-backed government on Wednesday announced arresting a number of leaders of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb on the outskirts of the capital Tripoli.

* Iran urged Brazil to allow refueling of Iranian ships in its ports, according to Press TV report on Wednesday. Otherwise, Iran will stop annual imports of US$2billion worth of commodities from the Latin American country, Ali Saghaeyan, Iran's ambassador in Brasilia, said.

* Iraqi forces on Wednesday concluded the second phase of a major offensive to hunt down remnants of Islamic State (IS) militants in north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the Iraqi military said.
