The body was found at the scene while about 100 other went missing. Twenty-five injured people were rushed to the hospital.

About 200 rescuers are stepping up efforts to search for the missing and some were using boats in a nearby lake.

The landslide took place in Hpakant region of Kachin state at 4am on December 22 (local time).

About 80 people were feared to be swept into a lake after the incident.

Myanmar produces up to 90 percent of the world’s jade. The most recent landslide occurred at a mine in Kachin in July 2020, claiming more than 170 lives. Another case in Kachin killed at least 113 people in 2015.
