World News in Brief: April 20

The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on April 19 held a meeting to discuss the current economic situation, poverty alleviation work in 2018, and a regulation on CPC publicity work. Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, presided over the meeting.

* Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Chairman of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea Kim Jong Un will discuss bilateral relations, denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and regional cooperation in their first official meeting before the end of April, the Kremlin said on April 19.

* US President Donald Trump spoke over phone with Libyan army commander Khalifa Haftar on April 15, discussing "ongoing counterterrorism efforts," the need to achieve peace and stability in Libya and the war-torn country's "transition to a stable, democratic political system, said the White House on April 19.

* Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on April 19 received a Russian delegation, which was coming from Saudi Arabia. The meeting touched upon the upcoming Astana meeting on Syria, and Assad underlined the importance of ongoing coordination between both sides to make the Astana meeting successful.
