World News in Brief: August 11

Cuba's President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Saturday (August 10) expressed support to Venezuela after the imposition of new US economic sanctions. Two weeks ago, the Cuban president attended the 25th edition of the Sao Paulo Forum held in the Venezuelan capital Caracas, where he also voiced Cuba's support "to the Bolivarian Revolution, to Venezuela's constitutional government and to the civic-military union that underpins that process," and to the efforts to achieve peace.

* The Chairman of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un has guided the test-fire of another new weapon, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Sunday (August 11). Kim expressed "great satisfaction" over the testing firings, which verified that the new weapon system performs as designed. This was the DPRK's fifth launch of projectiles since July 25th.

* A total of 28 people died and 20 remain missing after super typhoon Lekima made landfall in east China's Zhejiang Province on Saturday, local authorities said on Sunday morning. Lekima is moving northwards and will churn up the east coast of Shandong Province on Sunday.

* Around 115 people have died over the past three days in a fresh spate of floods in India, this time in several states located along the western coast, including Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, said media reports on Sunday.

* Eight more bodies were recovered, bringing the death toll to 41 in a monsoon landslide on Friday in Myanmar's Mon state, Myanmar Fire Services Department said on Saturday. Search and rescue operations are still underway.

* Devastating floods, which followed days of persistent rainfall, destroyed at least 300 houses and many farmlands in Nigeria's northern state of Yobe, according to local officials on Saturday. However, no life was lost following the disaster.

* Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday urged the world community to resist against the so-called "Deal of the Century" designed by the United States to settle disputes between Israel and the Palestinians.

* Saudi-led coalition involved in a war in Yemen demanded on Saturday an immediate cease-fire in Aden, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

* Portuguese government on Friday wowed to prepay European creditors EUR2 billion of Troika debt by the end of this year, Portuguese Lusa News Agency reported.

* Saudi Arabia announced Saturday that the total number of pilgrims reached 2,489,406, increased 117,731 individuals than last year.
