World News in Brief: January 15

A new direct air route is launched on January 14 between Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan Province, and Myanmar's Rangoon. The flight is the second direct route linking Hainan with Myanmar.

* President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (January 15) proposed changing Russia's constitution to give national legislation precedence over international treaties and rulings from international bodies in cases when they contravene Russia's own constitution.

* Greece said on Wednesday that migration policy will be implemented faster from now on by a new ministry as the country struggles with a resurgence of migrant and refugee arrivals.

* An unidentified aircraft on Wednesday bombarded a vehicle of a Yazidi militia affiliated with the Turkish outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq, leaving five militiamen killed, the Iraqi military said.

* Around 47 Lebanese army members were injured in clashes with protesters on Tuesday evening near the Central Bank of Lebanon in Hamra in the capital Beirut, the National News Agency reported on Wednesday.

* The Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Wednesday arrived in Baghdad on an official visit to hold talks with Iraqi leaders in a bid to mitigate the growing tension between the United States and Iran in the Middle East.

* UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jan Kubis on Wednesday blamed Lebanese officials for the country's chaos. The UN senior official also blamed Lebanese officials for watching the economy collapsing without taking any serious actions to prevent further deterioration.

* Iran's Judiciary spokesman said that Iran will sue the US President Donald Trump and the US military for the assassination of Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani, Tehran Times daily reported on Wednesday.

* Israel launched airstrikes on the T-4 air base in the central Syrian province of Homs on Tuesday, but causing no major damages. The Israeli warplanes fired several missiles on the base, most of which were intercepted by the Syrian air defense forces. Four missiles hit the base, the Syrian army said in a statement.

* Turkey and Russia are discussing the establishment of a secure zone within Syria's northwestern Idlib region where Syrians displaced by fighting can shelter during the winter, Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said on Wednesday.
