A delegation from Engineering Unit Rotation 5, led by Colonel Nguyen Xuan Thanh, held meetings on October 26 with leaders of the Abyei Administrative Area.
Thanh is Commander of the unit and Head of the Vietnamese peacekeeping force at the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
During the meetings, the two sides discussed the activities of Vietnamese military engineers serving with UNISFA, particularly their contributions to peacekeeping operations, infrastructure improvement and community support.
Chief Administrator of the Abyei Area Charles Abyei Jok expressed appreciation for the work of successive Vietnamese engineering units.
He said the efforts of previous rotations, particularly in building and repairing infrastructure, improving living conditions and assisting local communities, had left a positive impression and strengthened the trust of local authorities and residents in Vietnamese peacekeepers.
He also hailed the early results of Engineering Unit Rotation 5, which has assessed local needs and implemented a range of practical activities to support the community after only about a month in the area.
Jok expressed confidence that Engineering Unit Rotation 5 would build on these initial achievements, uphold the legacy of its predecessors and continue helping to improve local living standards and promote development in the area.
For its part, the Vietnamese delegation pledged to carry forward the achievements of previous engineering units and strengthen coordination with local authorities to fulfil its mission effectively.
During the visit, representatives of Engineering Unit Rotation 5 also met Minister of Physical Infrastructure and Public Utilities of the Abyei Area Awet Deng Miyan.
At the talks, the two sides reviewed progress on infrastructure construction and repair projects in the area and discussed ways to deepen cooperation.
The Minister praised the Vietnamese engineers for their sense of responsibility, professionalism and practical contributions to improving infrastructure and living conditions for Abyei residents.
He also expressed confidence in the partnership and hoped both sides would maintain close cooperation, share information and coordinate activities in line with local needs and UNISFA’s mandate.
