Arsenal beat Liverpool on penalties to lift FA Community Shield

Arsenal beat Liverpool 5-4 on penalties on Saturday to lift the FA Community Shield, the curtain-raiser for the English domestic season, after the two sides played out a 1-1 draw on a chilly afternoon at Wembley.

Gunners captain and match goal-scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired in the final penalty of the afternoon to complete the north London side’s second win over the league champions in the space of six weeks following a shortened summer break.

* Lionel Messi will not take a planned pre-season coronavirus test on Sunday or return to training on Monday after his shock announcement earlier this week that he wants to leave Barcelona, Spanish media reported on Saturday. La Vanguardia reported Messi will send another burofax, the method by which he told the club he wanted to leave, to inform them of his decision not to join his team mates for the first training session under new coach Ronald Koeman.

* Novak Djokovic kept his unbeaten streak in 2020 alive as he survived a terrible start to defeat Milos Raonic 1-6 6-3 6-4 in the final of the Western & Southern Open on Saturday. The 17-time Grand Slam winner fended off Raonic's mighty serve to extend his 2020 winning run to 23-0, clinching his 80th career title and equalling Rafael Nadal's record of 35 Masters 1000 wins.

* Japan's Naomi Osaka withdrew from her final against Victoria Azarenka in the Western & Southern Open in New York on Saturday because of a left hamstring injury. Osaka's injury means Belarusian Azarenka wins her first title since 2016.

* World number one Dustin Johnson and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama will share a two-stroke lead going into the final round of the BMW Championship on Sunday after shooting one-under-par 69s on Saturday. Their tally of one-under 209 gave them a bit of breathing space at the top of a crowded leaderboard ahead of Australia's Adam Scott (70), Canadian Mackenzie Hughes (69) and Chilean Joaquin Niemann (68), who shared third place.

Lewis Hamilton stormed to a dominant pole position in qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix on Saturday ahead of team mate Valtteri Bottas who completed a front-row lockout for Mercedes while rivals Ferrari endured a miserable day. The Briton, who leads the overall standings by 37 points from Red Bull's Max Verstappen, lapped the seven-km Spa-Francorchamps track in a record time of one minute 41.252 seconds, 0.511 seconds clear of Bottas.

* Charles Leclerc has warned Ferrari fans not expect any miracles on Sunday after the Italian Formula One team was knocked out of the second phase of qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix. The Monegasque claimed his first grand prix win from pole position in last year's Belgian race but on Saturday he qualified only 13th. Team mate Sebastian Vettel also had a poor qualifying session and qualified 14th.

* Alexander Kristoff won the opening stage of the Tour de France while Thibaut Pinot, who is hoping to end the home nation's 35-year wait for a local champion, was one of several riders to take a tumble during a rain-hit ride on Saturday.

* Striker Kasper Dolberg netted twice as Nice won 2-0 at Strasbourg to grab the early-season lead in Ligue 1 on Saturday. Nice, who had six players booked during the encounter, top the table with six points after two games.

* Stade Rennais overcame Montpellier 2-1 to extend their unbeaten start in Ligue 1 on Saturday as both teams went down to 10 men at Roazhon Park.

* Fluminense ended Vasco da Gama's unbeaten start to Brazil's Serie A on Saturday when they beat their city rivals 2-1 in a tense game in Rio de Janeiro.

* Internacional stayed top of Brazil’s Serie A on Saturday thanks to a 2-0 win away at Botafogo.
