He recalled that as a strategic route for the transport of sufficient supplies of food, weapons, and ammunition from the north to the southern front during the anti-US war, Truong Bon became a target for destruction by the US, as the site was hit by over 18,900 bombs of all kinds and thousands of rockets, within four years between 1964 and 1968.

Despite the fierceness of the war, dozens of thousands of soldiers embraced every hardship and even death to ensure the flow of traffic on the route with 1,240 of them laying down their lives on the battlefield, he noted.

Prominent among them were 13 youth volunteers, who died at very young age of between 17 and 20 just a few hours before the end of the US bombing campaigns of northern Vietnam.

In his speech, member of the Party Central Committee (PCC) and Editor-in-chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper Le Quoc Minh, who is also Deputy Head of the PCC’s Commission for Communications and Education and Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists’ Association, said the event was a chance to honour fallen heroes and soldiers at Truong Bon pass, for the independence and freedom of the nation.

He stressed that the patriotic tradition, heroic spirit and studiousness of Nghe An’s people have been always outstanding in all periods. This is the birthplace of eminent culturalists and heroes, especially President Ho Chi Minh. Nghe An was always a firm fulcrum in all resistance wars against foreign invaders.

On this occasion, Nhan Dan Newspaper with the companionship of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam) presented 50 social houses worth 2.5 billion VND to Nghe An province. The Secretariat of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee also awarded 300 million VND to help former youth volunteers and disadvantaged youth in Nghe An.
