Buffaloes are familiar images in the wet rice civilisation, as well as in the Vietnamese culture. They are industrious and have a close relationship with Vietnamese farmers like a faithful friend, being reminded with close affectionate words:
“Trâu ơi, ta bảo trâu này
(Buffalo, let me tell you something,
Ta đây, trâu đấy ai mà quản công…”
(Me here, you there, who is griping?)
A colour palette bringing a sense of joy and excitement to the exhibitors has been chosen by painter Pham An Hai as the main colours throughout his whole set of paintings to welcome the new year 2021. The artist chose to include the distinctive red colour of luck and fire in the five basic elements in many of his pictures, with the desire to send wishes of peace and prosperity to everyone.
Many buffaloes in his paintings were also made by the artist using the quintessential Vietnamese features fluttering in festive colours. After an unforgettable year, with the whole human race struggling with the COVID-19 epidemic and natural disasters, the feelings of excitement, joy and a positive outlook as well as dreams of a happy future are what Pham An Hai wishes to convey through the series of works, which he put a lot of effort and hard work into.
