Vietnam’s jobless rate estimated at 2.3% in first half of 2021

Vietnam’s unemployment rate in the second quarter rose to 2.4% from 2.19% in the first quarter due to the impact of COVID-19, according to the General Statistics Office.

The average jobless rate in the first six months of the year stood at 2.3%, of which the rate in urban areas was 3.07% and the rate in rural areas was 1.86%.

The proportion of people aged 15-24 without jobs during the period was 7.45%.

The average income of wage earners in the second quarter fell by more than VND410,000 to VND6.8 million but rose by nearly VND455,000 over the same period last year.

According to the GSO, the number of people of working age was estimated at 45.2 million in the first six months of 2021, while the number of working people aged over 15 was 49.9 million.

13.9 million of these were in the farming sector, 16.4 million in industry and services and 19.6 million in services.

It is projected that the Vietnamese economy will continue to face difficulties in the latter half of the year, therefore the Government needs to promptly roll out solutions to support enterprises and workers affected by COVID-19.

The Government is planning to issue a new resolution to support those hit by the pandemic with total funding estimated at VND26 trillion (US$1.1 billion).
