DNA sampling begins for unidentified martyrs’ remains at Mai Dich Cemetery

On August 7, the Ha Noi Steering Committee for the Search, Repatriation and Identification of Martyrs’ Remains held an incense-offering and commemoration ceremony at Mai Dich Cemetery, before commencing the collection of samples from unidentified martyrs’ remains for DNA testing to help establish their identities.

Mai Dich Cemetery is currently the resting place of 1,227 martyrs and contains two collective burial areas. It has the largest number of graves of unidentified martyrs in the capital, with 469 graves yet to be identified.

Of the 1,227 martyrs buried at the cemetery, 1,221 sacrificed their lives during the resistance war against French colonialism, five during the resistance war against US imperialism, and one during the period of defending the southwestern border.

The cemetery is also the resting place of 492 former Party and State leaders and senior officialsfrom different periods.

Implementing the policies of the Party, State and the National Steering Committee on accelerating the search, repatriation and identification of martyrs’ remains for which information remains incomplete, Ha Noi has assigned the municipal Steering Committee and the Ha Noi Capital Command to coordinate with relevant departments and local authorities in carrying out the sampling programme.

Following the incense-offering ceremony, delegates paid tribute and offered incense at individual martyrs’ graves. Specialised teams then carried out the collection of samples from the remains in strict accordance with prescribed procedures, ensuring solemnity, safety and accuracy.

Personnel involved in the operation included officers and soldiers from units under the Ha Noi Capital Command, including the 301st Infantry Division, the 544th Engineer Battalion and the Guard and Military Control Battalion; medical personnel from the Ha Noi Department of Health; and representatives of the local authorities of Phu Dien Ward.
