Speaking at the opening ceremony, WorldFMC's interim chairman Richard McCarthy highlighted the role of the organisation in the joint effort to develop sustainable local food systems, especially in building links between rural and urban areas, while strengthening the economy, community health and biodiversity in each country.

Hosted by Coldiretti and Fondazione Campagna Amica - the largest farmers’ association and farmers market network in Europe respectively - the first meeting of WorldFMC, which runs from May 20 to 23, will be an occasion to establish a community-of-practice in order to formalise the mandate for the organisation, share best practices and reinforce a sense of camaraderie for this important work to cultivate purposeful and managed farmers markets.

As part of the conference, WorldFMC will host several panel discussions, with the participation of high-level representatives of the United Nations, focusing strengthening local food systems worldwide, including conversations around economic impact and reviving rural economies through farmers markets.
