The news agency cited information released by the panel responsible for the health of high-ranking officials as saying that the former Government leader passed away in the early hours of March 17.

Phan Van Khai was born on December 25, 1933 in Cu Chi district on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City.

Assuming the highest Government post when Vietnam was still in its early years of the Doi Moi reform, former PM Khai made an active and determined effort to build new institutions in order to bring into play the strength of each economic sector, especially private enterprises, and stimulate Vietnam into opening up to and integrating into the world.

For nearly ten years during his premiership, fundamental laws of the Doi Moi era were formulated.

The Government under PM Khai was credited with the promulgation of the Law on Enterprises, the abolition of hundreds of business sub-licences and Vietnam’s accession to the World Trade Organisation.

The former leader was awarded with the Golden Star Order in recognition of his significant contributions to national development.
