The event is part of series of activities held by the National Traffic Safety Committee in response to the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

It is also among activities under an education coordination programme between the committee and the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha Central Committee to encourage Buddhists to engage in promoting traffic order and safety.

The requiem aims to commemorate those who unfortunately lost their lives in traffic accidents and sound an alarm in the heavy losses and pain caused by the consequences of accidents in the whole society, thus raising the awareness of the community in abiding by traffic laws.

The committee reported that during the first seven months of 2024, the country recorded more than 16,000 traffic accidents, which cost the lives of more than 7,000 people and injured over 12,000 others.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), every 24 seconds someone is killed in a road traffic crash, or about 1.35 million every year. Between 20 and 50 million people suffer non-fatal injuries each year as a result of road traffic accidents, many of whom are left disabled as a result of their injuries.

It is estimated that road traffic crashes cost most countries around 3% of their gross domestic product.
