Ha Giang’s Buckwheat Flower Festival opens

The first Buckwheat Flower Festival on the Dong Van Karst Plateau opened at a ceremony held in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang on November 12.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Ha Giang provincial People’s Committee Tran Duc Quy noted that the first provincial festival in celebration of the beautiful flower on the Dong Van Karst Plateau aimed to promote the province’s tourism, take advantage of the plateau’s unique landscapes and honour the region’s cultural features.

The ceremony was followed by a special arts performance introducing the history and features of the Dong Van Karst Plateau and the Dong Van ancient town, as well as the symbolic beauty of the buckwheat flower.

The festival will last until November 15 with various activities, including an exhibition of the buckwheat flower and products made of the flower’s seeds; a buckwheat flower wine gala dinner; a ‘khen’ (a musical instrument used by the Mong ethnic minority) festival; and contests on growing and using the buckwheat flower in decoration.

Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the Dong Van Karst Plateau, discover customs and traditions of the native ethnic minority people and sample their unique cuisine.
