The information was revealed by Tran Hong Thai, General Director of the Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, at a national conference on natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue in 2023, held in Hanoi on April 20.

From now until May 2023, storms and tropical depressions are unlikely to appear and are likely to occur in the East Sea/South China Sea, from about the second half of June 2023, he noted.

The number of storms and tropical depressions operating in the East Sea area, as well as affecting the mainland, is likely to approximate the average of many years (about 11-13 storms in the East Sea and 5-7 storms affecting the East Sea), he said, adding that the storm will be more active in the East Sea from August-October 2023 and gradually decrease from November.

Meanwhile, the rainy season will start earlier than the average of many years, in the Central Highlands and the South and is equivalent in the Northern region.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang affirmed that natural disasters are becoming more extreme and unpredictable.

The Deputy PM asked ministries, branches and localities to implement solutions such as regularly reviewing and proposing adjustments to policies on natural disaster prevention and control, with a focus on prevention.

In the context of a limited state budget, it is necessary to focus resources on warning and forecasting work, he noted, suggesting continuing to do well in information and communication work, to build a common sense in the community about natural disaster prevention and control, the Deputy PM said.
