A Uruguay veteran journalist who has visited Vietnam three times, said he greatly valued General Vo Nguyen Giap and spoke highly of the General’s characteristics, describing him as military genius.
In spite of having never met or talked with General Vo Nguyen Giap, Professor Carlyle A. Thayer from the Australian Defence Force Academy said that through research and study, he much admires the talent and intelligence of General Vo Nguyen Giap.
He added that he was most impressed with General Vo Nguyen Giap, and evaluated the strategic vision of the General in a number of issues. Professor Thayer confirmed that General Giap is a great talent strategist.
An article in the Palestine Chronicle applauded General Giap for leading his country through two liberation wars. The article also gave a quotation from General Giap in an interview with CNN in 2004 when he spoke of the US war on Iraq, saying that a nation that stands up and knows how to unite will always defeat a foreign invader.
“When people have the spirit to reach for independent sovereignty… and show solidarity, it means the people can defeat the enemy”. According to the article’s author, these words will continue to define history.
The Japan Times said although General Giap was a teacher and journalist with no formal military training, he built a ragtag communist insurgency into a highly effective military force. In 1954, with an army of rugged guerrillas who wore sandals made of car tires, Giap encircled the French Army at Dien Bien Phu, where the French Gen. Henri Navarre had set up his defenses, the newspaper added, affirming that he will remain one of the towering figures in Vietnam’s modern history.
Granma, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party, published an article on October 9, praising Vo Nguyen Giap as the legendary Vietnamese General, a great friend of Cuba and revolutionary causes, one of the great military strategists of history. The article also reminded of ‘Ge Luo’ (Volcano under the Snow); the name given to this exceptional man.
The DAWN media group from Pakistan called Vo Nguyen Giap the general who never gave up. The day General Giap passed away closed a chapter in history that not only determined the fate of Vietnam but resonated throughout the world.
