The province also needs to tap its potential for stronger socio-economic development and choose appropriate investment forms for its localities, the Deputy PM said at a working session with leaders of Kien Giang on March 18.
He advised the province to establish its comparative advantages to attract more investment and improve the quality of life of locals while putting forth suitable measures to cope with climate change.
Regarding smuggling and crime prevention, the Deputy PM asked relevant agencies in the province to co-ordinate with each other to strengthen inspection over border areas and seas to detect transnational smuggling and strictly handle violations.
Kien Giang posted revenues of VND66.1 trillion (US$3.1 billion) in 2014, up 9.5% compared to 2013, according to Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Mai Anh Nhin.
The province also took the lead in rice production with a total output of 4.5 million tonnes. The poverty rate was reduced to 3.5% and the average income per capita reached US$2,318 in 2014.
Last year, the province found more than 2,200 cases of smuggling and trade fraud with a total value of over VND72 billion (US$3.38 million). 93 violators involved in 60 cases were prosecuted.
