Troussier will succeed the Korean manager Park Hang-seo, who oversaw Vietnam winning the Southeast Asian championship in 2018 and reaching the third qualifying round for the 2022 World Cup.
Speaking at an event on February 27 to formally introduce the new head coach, Troussier stated that he would tap into his experience and take Vietnamese football to a new height.
He told the media that during his career, he had led eight different teams around the world and had the opportunity to participate in the World Cup, the Olympic Games and tournaments in Africa, with a total of more than 200 international matches.
Before taking the helm of Vietnam’s national team, Troussier already worked with Vietnamese football from 2018 to 2021 as technical manager of the PVF football training centre and coach of Vietnam’s U-19 team.
Troussier said that his predecessor Park Hang-seo left an impressive legacy with a highly competitive team, adding that his understanding of the Vietnamese team will serve as valuable material for him to conquer the journeys ahead.
Vietnamese football will have a busy schedule in the coming months, including the SEA Games in May, the qualification rounds for the U-23 Asian Championship and 2026 World Cup later this year and the 2024 Asian Cup.
Troussier said he and his associates are ready with plans for the upcoming tournaments, noting that every tournament is a good opportunity for Vietnam to train and create the foundation for further development.
For its part, Vietnam’s football governing body VFF expressed its confidence that with his capacity and experience, Philippe Troussier will help Vietnamese football record new achievements.
