The plant includes three 2MW turbines with the capacity to produce 6MW of electricity.
The PetroVietnam Power Renewable Energy Limited Company under the PetroVietnam Power Corporation began construction of the plant in November 2010, with total investment of more than VND335 billion (US$17 million).
The plant will provide an annual output of 25 million kWh in co-ordination with the diesel power plant already on the island.
Previously, power for the island was generated solely by the diesel plant, which has a a total capacity of only 3,000kW. Because of the power shortage, local residents and businesses had to use generators to produce an extra 1,000kW of electricity.
The wind power plant will resolve the island's current power shortage and provide electricity for 27,000 people. It will also contribute to protecting the environment and lowering the cost of producing electricity.
