Speaking at the congress, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung congratulated the role-models who have upheld the 70-year glorious tradition of the Vietnam People’s Army.
In the current global context, as different opportunities and challenges have emerged, the army needs to progress with the times ensuring it is modern and professional, whilst upholding its revolutionary nature and remaining loyal to the Party, the Motherland and the people, he noted.
In particular, the army should always be vigilant, prepared to fight and ready to respond promptly to any potential threats to the country, the PM added.
He expressed his belief that generations of Vietnamese military officers and soldiers would continue to contribute actively and effectively to national construction and defence.
The congress is evaluating the patriotic emulation movements of the armed forces and honouring role-models of the movements over the past five years.
