He made the remarks at a reception for Ambassador Duong Chi Dung, head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the UN, the WTO and other international organisations, in Geneva, Switzerland on November 24. Dung came to present his credentials to the WTO Director General.
Azevedo suggested Vietnam continue its coordination with the WTO Secretariat in putting forth initiatives to effect the materialisation of multilateral commitment packages and to deal with emerging issues in global trade.
For his part, Dung noted his wish to receive more advice from the WTO Secretariat and the Director General on Vietnam’s economic and trade development policy.
He also called for their support in building a legal framework for the economy and trade, for education and for improving Vietnam’s capacity to actualise multilateral commitments and to handle disputes.
The two sides exchanged views on issues relating to global trade and the global economy, including preparations for the eleventh WTO Ministerial Conference, which is scheduled for December 2017 in Argentina, and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit to be hosted by Vietnam in 2017.
Dung congratulated Azevedo on the achievements of the ninth and tenth WTO Ministerial Conferences in Indonesia and Kenya, especially the development of commitment packages for developing and underdeveloped nations.
He affirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of reform, opening, trade liberalisation and further integration into the world economy.
The ambassador also stressed Vietnam’s support for the multilateral trade system and pledged to contribute to the organiation’s success.
