This is the first visit to South Africa by the Vietnam Women's Union to establish relations and share information between the VWU and the ANC Women's League, an organisation that protects the interests of women, established in 1948.
Addressing the working session, VWU Vice President Tran Thi Huong said that Vietnam should learn from South Africa’s experience in helping women to affirm their position in society and in the operation of the State apparatus, as 50% of South African government leaders are women.
The visit is an appropriate opportunity for the VWU to establish a cooperative relationship with the ANC Women’s League, thereby expanding cooperation with other authorised agencies in Africa, Huong said.
Huong noted that the two sides can cooperate in training female officials, particularly in gender equality, through training courses at the Vietnam Women's Academy.
Member of the National Executive Committee of the ANC Women’s League Pinky Kekana, who is also Deputy Minister of Communications and the Secretary General of the Pan African Women’s Organisation (PAWO), valued the visit of the VWU.
She noted that one of the ways to empower women in society is to help them run good business, which is also considered a potential area of cooperation between the two sides. The two sides can also work to boost health cooperation, especially maternal and child health protection, Kekana said.
Earlier, the VWU attended the World Committee meeting of the Women’s International Democratic Federation in Namibia, on August 7-12, to discuss the issues of gender equality, world peace and social justice for all.
