Vietnam, Cuba hold defence policy dialogue

The third Vietnam-Cuba Defence Policy Dialogue was held in Hanoi on September 17.

The high-level military delegation of Vietnam was led by Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, member of the Party Central Committee, member of the Central Military Commission’s Standing Board, and Deputy Defence Minister.

The high-level military delegation of Cuba was led by Senior Lieutenant General Alvaro Lopez Miera, Politburo member, Chief of the General Staff and First Deputy Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces.

At the meeting, the two sides agreed to further step up the ties between the two ministries in a more practical and effective manner.

They also evaluated the implementation of contents of defence cooperation agreed by the two sides at the second Defence Policy Dialogue; and the implementation of the dossier on 60 years of defence relations of the two countries (1960-2020).

Vietnamese Deputy Defence Minister, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh affirmed that Vietnam continuously wishes to bolster the friendship and co-operation between the two armies and between the two Parties, States and people.

The two sides noted the countries have effectively implemented cooperation activities on the basis of the signed documents and agreements under the cooperation plan for 2017 – 2019 period. High-ranking exchanges have also been further increased, helping to promote the defence partnership in a result-oriented manner.

Apart from discussing measures to boost bilateral defence ties, the officers compared their notes on the impact of global and regional issues on their respective country’s security and defence.

The results of the third Vietnam-Cuba Defence Policy Dialogue is considered an important basis for the two sides to integrate the cooperation plan for the 2020–2022 period, thereby orienting a new stage of development in the bilateral defence relations, contributing to strengthening and developing the fine and time-honoured friendship between Vietnam and Cuba.
