The Sunday Times, a Sunday edition of The Straits Times, has published an article commenting that in the pandemic-battered environment, few countries are approaching a major leadership transition amid conditions as rosy as Vietnam's.

With domestic coronavirus infections largely under control, its economy is expected to outpace the region at 6.7% growth this year.

The article quoted Dr. Le Thai Ha from the Fulbright School of Public Policy and Management as saying that Vietnam is on a firm footing. The government has managed to lower public debt, increase foreign currency reserves and create a more conducive environment for start-ups.

* Vietnam has started to emerge as the latest Asian nation with a strengthening position in the region, and a future high potential for economic growth, wrote Murat Ungor, a Senior Lecturer, Department of Economics, University of Otago in his article run by New Zealand’s website asiamediacentre.org.nz.

In the article, the author cited data from the World Bank as saying that the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 7% in 2019, similar to 2018, one of the fastest growth rates in the region.

International trade was also progressively liberalised, with the signing of various free trade agreements, it said, adding that the World Bank now considers Vietnam one of the most dynamic emerging countries in East Asia.

Vietnam responded quickly and effectively to the pandemic, and its successes against COVID-19 have been acknowledged, it noted, attributing that keys to Vietnam’s success have been strategic testing, aggressive contact tracing and effective public communications campaigns which pushed clear and science-based messages to the population.

* Under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), Vietnam has become one of the most impressive, optimistic and successful countries, said Associate Prof. Bilveer Singh, deputy head of the Department of Political Science at the National University of Singapore.

The Singaporean scholar highlighted the country’s outstanding political stability. Vietnam has been among the countries in the world with the most successful economic growth over the past five years, which remained positive (nearly 3%) in 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic, he added.

The economic growth has reflected the CPV’s sound policies as well as the balance between domestic and external trade, while demonstrating that domestic economic bases, whether agriculture and industry, have borne fruits.

* Alberto Salazar, a Vietnam-based reporter of the Latin American News Agency Prensa Latina, told the Vietnam News Agency that the upcoming 13th National Party Congress is the most significant event in Vietnam and the Communist Party’s leadership has always been a decisive factor in the country’s destiny throughout different periods in history.

The reporter also spoke highly of the CPV’s direct and consistent efforts in harmoniously coordinating with the Government to steer the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and recover the economy.

The Prensa Latina correspondent also highlighted Vietnam’s success as ASEAN Chair in 2020 despite the COVID-19 crisis. It held many teleconferences and phone talks with leaders of countries in the region and the world to coordinate the pandemic response strategy and maintain contact.

“The Vietnamese people can be proud of their Communist Party,” Salazar said. “Likewise, the Communist Party can be proud of its people,” the reported stressed.
