At the meeting, the Vietnamese NA chairman spoke highly of the Japanese legislature’s contribution to the success of the 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly (IPU-132) held in Hanoi as well as its support of the friendship and cooperation between the two countries and their peoples.

The two nations should continue to hold high-level meetings on a regular basis and ramp up exchange activities between the two parliaments and their representatives as well as the friendship parliamentarians’ unions to further strengthen the bilateral strategic partnership, Hung proposed.

He expressed hope for the constant support of the National Diet of Japan in implementing signed high-level economic agreements and urged for the continued provision of official development assistance from the Japanese Government in order to help Vietnam develop into an industrialised nation by 2020.

Speaking of the regional tension in the East Sea, Chairman Hung said that Vietnam maintains its stance of settling the current dispute via peaceful resolutions in accordance with international laws and hoped that involved parties would soon agree upon a Code of Conduct (COC) in the East Sea.

Vietnam sincerely thanked Japan and its National Diet for its support on this matter, he added.

For his part, Speaker Oshima praised the strong development of the Extensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia between Vietnam and Japan and reaffirmed that Japan treasures its relationship with Vietnam—which is regarded as a key focus in its external policies.

The same day, NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung visited Vietnamese staff of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, who he congratulated on the occasion of the 70th founding anniversary of the diplomatic sector (August 28, 1945).

He hoped that the permanent mission would continue efforts to unite the overseas Vietnamese community in New York and inspire love for their home country.

NA Chairman Hung arrived in New York at 8am on August 30 (local time) to take part in the 4th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament from August 31 to September 2 at the invitation of President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Saber Chowdhury.

The NA Chairman is scheduled to participate in the general debate entitled “Placing democracy at the service of peace and sustainable development: Building a world the people want” and the panel discussion “Translating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into action”. He will chair a discussion on “Mainstreaming the SDGs in the budget and legislative process, overcoming silos, monitoring national and global progress through parliaments”.

He will hold bilateral talks with IPU President Saber Chowdhury, the President of the United Nations General Assembly and several speakers of parliament at the sidelines of the event.

The NA Chairman will also preside over a banquet at the UN headquarters to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day (September 2) with diplomats and overseas Vietnamese nationals in the US scheduled to attend.
