Irish President pays State visit to Vietnam

Irish President Michael D. Higgins and his spouse are paying an official State visit to Vietnam from November 5-14 at the invitation of Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang and his wife.

The President is accompanied by Irish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Charlie Flanagan, Irish Ambassador to Vietnam Cáit Moran, General Secretary to the President Art O'Leary and General Secretary to the Irish Prime Minister M. Fredo, among other high-ranking officials.

President Higgins was born in April 18, 1941. He graduated in Sociology at University College, Galway under the National University of Ireland and graduated from Indiana University Bloomington with a Master’s degree in Sociology.

The President, who is also a journalist, writer and poet, was an Irish Labour Party Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs. During 1993-1997, he served as Minister for the Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht.

He was appointed as Mayor of Galway for two tenures for 1982–1983 and 1991–1992.

President Higgins has addressed the House of Commons for 25 years and the Senate of Parliament for nine years at different periods.

In November 11, 2011, he was sworn in as President of Ireland.
