HCMA Director Nguyen Xuan Thang stated that Vietnam-India energy cooperation has great development potential and is an important component of the two countries’ bilateral cooperation.
Both countries have determined nuclear energy, oil and gas, electrical power and renewable energy as the four main areas for energy cooperation, said Thang.
In nuclear energy, India has provided assistance to Vietnam to establish a training centre at the Da Lat Nuclear Research Institute, donated a teletherapy machine to the Can Tho Cancer Hospital and helped Vietnam train nuclear experts.
India is one of the earliest countries to cooperate with Vietnam in oil and gas exploration and is providing many concessional loans for electrical power development.
In the field of renewable energy, the South Asian country has invested US$814 million in 176 solar and wind projects in Vietnam.
The HCMC Director stated that energy cooperation between Vietnam and India has recorded many encouraging results but has yet to match the potential and expectations of each country.
For his part, Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Parvathaneni Harish expressed his belief that energy cooperation between the two countries will grow further, especially in renewable energy projects, helping to deepen the Vietnam-India comprehensive strategic partnership.
At the conference, the participants discussed the energy policies of Vietnam and India. They also conversed over the current state of and potential for energy cooperation between the two countries while identifying the challenges they face cooperating in the energy field.
Several suggestions were put forward to further promote Vietnam-India cooperation in energy security in a new context in order to make the Vietnam-India comprehensive strategic partnership more substantive.
