Sri Lanka explores investment opportunities in Bac Ninh

Vice Chairman of the Bac Ninh provincial People’s Committee Vuong Quoc Tuan has expressed thewish that Sri Lanka will have many investment projects in Bac Ninh and Vietnam thanks to the potential andstrength of the province as well as the good relations between the two countries.

He made the statement at a meeting held in Bac Ninhprovince on November 27 with a delegation from the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Vietnam led by Ambassador Prasanna Gamage.

The Vice Chairman of Bac Ninh provincial People’s Committee informed the guests about the socio-economic development of the province, Bac Ninh being one of those provinces with the highest growth rates in Vietnam.

Bac Ninh is estimated to see a GRDP of VND121.7 trillion (US$5.26 billion) in 2020, up 1% compared to 2019 and an industrial production value of VND1.11 trillion (US$48 million), ranked first among all provinces in the country.

The province has 16 concentrated industrial parks including 10 industrial parks in operation, attracting more than 1,500 foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprisesfrom 37 countries and territories. As of November 20, the province has 1,614 valid FDI projects.

However, Bac Ninh has no investment projects from Sri Lanka and wishes to attract investment from Sri Lankanenterprises, Tuan noted.

Ambassador Prasanna Gamage affirmed that Vietnam and Sri Lanka have had a cooperative relationship acrossmany areas since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1970.

He pledged to be a bridge to connect Sri Lankan enterprises with Bac Ninh to help them find investment and trade opportunities in the areas of health, education and cultural exchange.

Sri Lanka has 14 investment projects in Vietnam with a total investment of US$76.7 million, mainly in the garment and textile area.

The two countries recorded a total trade revenue of US$381 million in 2019. Sri Lanka is the fourth largest trading partner of Vietnam in South Asia.
