Quang Liem off to good start at Millionaire Chess Open

Top Vietnamese chess player, Le Quang Liem barely broke a sweat to beat Chilean Eduardo Rojas in the first round of the 2014 Millionaire Chess Open taking place on in Las Vegas on October 10.

Quang Liem is seeded third in the Open category with an elo rating of 2706, after top seed, Wesley So (Philippines, 2755) and second seed, Bu Xiangzhi (China, 2710).

With the advantage of playing white, Liem put constant pressure on lower-ranked Eduardo, forcing him to concede after just 32 moves.

Liem’s tough opponents, Wesley So and Bu Xiangzhi, also pocketed handy wins over Robert Perez of America and Colombian Carlos Perdomo respectively in Board 1 and 2.

Liem will play his second-round encounter against Bosnian Denis Kadric (Elo 2473) in Board 3.

The Millionaire Chess Open is underway in Las Vegas from October 9-13. Over 500 players from 43 countries are competing for total prize money of US$1 million in six sections of different elo rating levels: under 1400, under 1600, under 1800, under 2000, between 2350-2499, and over 2499 (Open).
