The government official made the remark at a ceremony held by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) in Hanoi on May 18 to mark Vietnam Science and Technology Day (May 18).
At the event, MOST also presented the annual Ta Quang Buu Award (2020) to scientists with outstanding achievements in basic research in the areas of natural sciences and engineering.
According to Deputy PM Dam, it is worth mentioning that in times of difficulty, Vietnam has found opportunities and created a driving force for the science and technology sector to be raised up.
He expressed his belief that science and technology will contribute to help Vietnam and the whole world in overcoming various challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic.

The award winners include Vuong Thi Ngoc Lan from Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Pham Tien Son from Da Lat University, and Nguyen Truong Thanh Hieu from Ton Duc Thang University.
Vuong Thi Ngoc Lan was honoured for her research work on IVF transfer of fresh or frozen embryos in women without polycystic ovaries, while Pham Tien Son was presented with the award for his mathematics research on ‘Generic properties for semialgebraic programs’.
Nguyen Truong Thanh Hieu won the award for his project ‘Low energy electron inelastic mean free path in materials'.
Minister of Science and Technology Chu Ngoc Anh said that after seven years of organisation, the Ta Quang Buu Award has become a huge source of encouragement for Vietnamese scientists to pursue their scientific researches.
The awarded projects represent Vietnam’s achievements in basic research while gaining recognition around the world, he noted.
On the occasion, the MOST also honoured typical organisations and individuals in carrying out research projects serving the prevention and control of the COVICI-19 pandemic, including the research and production of the test KIT for SARS-CoV-2 and others.
