Southwestern region urged to promote agricultural production, tourism

The provinces and localities in the southwestern region should focus on promoting agricultural production as well as tourism and services, thus contributing to achieving the growth target of the country.

The remark was made by Politburo member and Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue, who is also Head of the Steering Committee for the Southwestern Region, at a conference to review the committee’s operation during the first six months and to implement its tasks for the second half of the year in Can Tho City on June 29.

During the first half of this year, the region’s total budget revenue reached 51.7% of the estimate; total social investment capital increased by 13.5% compared to the same period last year. As many as 4,275 enterprises were established, up 10.2%, with registered capital down 22.7%.

In addition, the healthcare and educational sectors continued to gain positive results while policies related to ethnic and religious work were fully implemented and political security and social safety and order were maintained.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy PM Hue asked the provinces and cities in the region to enhance the attraction of foreign direct investment capital to develop enterprises in line with the spirit of the Government’s Resolutions No.19 and No.35, particularly in agricultural and rural development.

The Deputy PM affirmed that the steering committee would continue to pay much attention to implementing the PM’s Decision No.593 on connectivity for the Mekong Delta region. He also asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment, in its role as head of the management board, to rapidly implement specific works.

The committee will also focus on action themes when organising international sponsors’ conferences for the development of the Mekong River Delta region and seminars on the effects of landslides in the region in order to propose radical measures to the Party Central Committee and Government, added Deputy PM Hue.

He noted that the Government assigned the Ministry of Finance to allocate funds to support local people living in landslide affected areas for their stable resettlement as well as closely coordinate with other ministries to solve issues related to vocational training, education and building a stable, peaceful and friendly border area.
