Vietnam came out on top at the 2016 South East Asia Fencing Federation Championships in Singapore from September 3-6, winning a total of five gold, six silver and seven bronze medals.

Vietnam definitively won the men’s sabre team event on the last day of competition thanks to the brilliance of fencers Vu Thanh An and Nguyen Xuan Loi.

The men’s sabre individual discipline also saw Vietnam dominate, with An and Loi winning the gold and silver medals, respectively.

Despite missing out on the women’s sabre individual title, Nguyen Thi Le Dung contributed significantly to Vietnam’s overall victory in the team category.

Regarding the men’s épée event, Vietnamese fencers also managed to score the team gold after dropping the individual crown.

Vietnam’s overall domination was not so surprising; however, more gold medals could have been added to Vietnam’s tally if Nguyen Thi Le Dung and Nguyen Tien Nhat had finished victorious in their favourite women’s sabre individual and men’s épée individual events, instead of nabbing just one silver and one bronze, respectively.
